Overview

Web Application Hosting is an easy to use Web service that provides campus users access to their own Web applications without needing to download, install, and maintain additional hardware and software. A virtual host provides Web service at a specific domain name while still offering the access control and management functionality of an AFS directory. It optionally includes functionality not available on the www.umich.edu gateway servers.

Web Application Hosting provides university Faculty, Staff, and Students the ability to access their departmental Web applications in order to create, communicate, preserve and apply knowledge, art and academic values in a user friendly, secure and cost effective environment. Features include:

Monitoring 24x7 Monitoring
Http-only sites Multi-homed (2 machines, more if load requires) to maximize load balancing and availability
PHP and MySQL service available Can include PHP and SQL
Limited support for perl, python Full support not available for Perl/python
Secure Internet Communications Via https/SSL available, either via servername-indication or IP based hosting as required
University single-signon (Cosign/Weblogin) authentication available (Requires https/SSL above). Access control via. MCommunity groups available (requires University single-signon.)
Configurable monthly log reports (using analog) Unprocessed logs available for 6 months
Files served from IFS home directories Include robust file system backup and directory-level access control
Mail forwarding available on request Can forward to non umich.edu domains

Note:  All Domain Names associated with the University of Michigan are governed by the Standard Practice Guide section 601.15-1.  Sub-domain requests for the umich.edu domain are governed by the same Standard Practice Guide section 601.15-1.  The creation of such a domain requires the written authorization of the unit director, provided to the UM hostmaster (hostmaster@umich.edu).

This service can be used both on and off campus.
