Overview

The MiBackup (formerly TSM) service provides networked backup of data on your server-class machines (such as application and file servers, server-side databases, and research data collections).

Previously named TSM, IBM Spectrum Protect is a client/server application that lets you backup files from, and restore files to, your server over the network. This service is offered to members of the University of Michigan community through an annual contract.

How It Works

The IBM Spectrum Protect Backup client is installed on your server, where it performs scheduled automatic backups with data compression and data encryption/decryption for transmission to and from the MiBackup server located in the Administrative Services Building (ASB) data center.

Features:
  • Backups and restores for departmental servers.
  • Scheduled automatic backups.
  • Data compression and transmission encryption options.
  • Restore at will within your time frame—all backups are stored in the tape libraries, ready for automatic access at any time.
  • Copies of data kept at two different locations for disaster recovery

Disaster Recovery Features

Our servers are maintained in the Administrative Services Building (ASB) data center, which has full UPS redundancy, enhanced electrical systems, fire protection, security systems, and environmental alarms. Data is replicated to the Michigan Academic Computing Center which also has the same high standards for data reliability.

We can work with you to create a backup strategy that best suits your needs.  This includes backup schedule(s), the number of backup versions stored, how long backups are retained, optimal serialization type, as well as offsite copies of your data if required.

Who can use the service?:

The MiBackup service is intended for server data protection only and is therefore likely to be of most use to U-M system administrators. Data protection for individual Windows workstations can be obtained through the Desktop Backup service.

Rates & Pricing:

The MiBackup solution is purchased by the terabyte (TB). One terabyte of stored data costs $564 per year. If you exceed 1 terabyte, you will be charged for a second terabyte. This rate does not include offsite copies of your data.
