The LSA Geographic Information System (GIS) consulting service provides assistance on a wide variety of GIS-related topics, such as:

  • Making maps -- Need a map for a publication? Want to plot data on a map to use in a class or a grant proposal?
  • Geospatial analysis -- Require help identifying spatial patterns and trends in your data? Have a large, complex data set whose spatial relationships you want to explore? In need of advanced computational horsepower to tackle your compute-intensive geoprocessing job?
  • Gecoreferencing -- Have a historic paper map, a map from a text, or a hand-drawn sketch, which you want to turn into a digital map on which you can overlay your data?
  • Geocoding -- Need to convert a spreadsheet of data that contains addresses into a map?
  • Story Maps -- Want to harness the power of maps to tell your story? Have data, maps, pictures, videos, text, and other multi-media content you would like to combine into a visually-compelling, interactive, responsive web-based user experience?
  • Designing mobile GIS projects -- Need assistance integrating mobile devices and GIS in your field work, or with your data collection practices in the field?
  • Teaching specialized GIS workshops -- Have a group interested in learning about GIS topics in the context of their discipline? Want to learn more about a particular GIS topic, such as mobile data collection, enterprise GIS data management and collaboration, Story Maps, web-based GIS, etc.?
  • ArcGIS -- Require assistance getting started with ESRI's ArcGIS suite of software, such as ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS for Desktop, ArcGIS Pro, Collector for ArcGIS, Explorer for ArcGIS, Story Maps, GeoPlanner, Community Analyst, Business Analyst Online, ArcGSI for Server, Portal for ArcGIS, etc.?

OUr solutions typically leverage Esri's ArcGIS platform, which provides a range of online, mobile, desktop, and server applications, all of which are generally available for free to any U-M faculty, staff, student, or sponsored affiliate to use for university-related research, teaching, or selected administrative needs. QGIS is another area of expertise; it is an open-source alternative to ArcGIS, often useful when a project does not meet the licensing requirements for free use of ArcGIS.
