Desktop Backup

The ITS Desktop Backup service takes an easy to use and feature­-full commercial backup system and integrates U-M passwords, ShortCode billing and enhanced security to protect all types of data, including sensitive data. Use a web browser to access and restore files, retain an unlimited number of file versions and get support from local IT support staff and ITS Desktop Backup experts.

Desktop Backup utilizes Code42’s CrashPlan PROe to automatically back­up critical data stored on personal computers to cloud storage. The data can be restored in the event of accidental deletion, if the computer is lost or stolen, or if it's infected by a virus.

  • Backups are automatic, continuous and occur in the background
  • No file size limits
  • Select folders or individual files for backup
  • Files and metadata are encrypted before, during and after transmitting
  • Unlimited File Versions
  • Save Deleted Files however long you choose to do so (one month by default)
  • Restore your own files or groups of files without needing IT Staff
  • Restore your files from one computer to another using your web browser

Who can use the service?: 

The Desktop Backup service is available to users in units on all U­-M campuses. The service must be requested by a designated representative of the unit and paid for with a shortcode.

Individuals may not order the service for themselves, and they may not pay using any other method.

NOTE: The Medical School provides an unrelated desktop backup service utilizing CrashPlan PROe for their constituents under the brand “Dataguard”. For more information, please contact MSIS.

Where can the service be used?: 

The service can be used for backup or restores from any location with an internet connection. The service is not restricted by campus firewalls.
