Wi-Fi

WiFi service will be available in many, but not all, in-building networks across campus. In those places where ITS manages and maintains this service it will appear as MWireless and MGuest when browsing for WiFi networks.

Web Application Hosting

Web Application Hosting is an easy to use Web service that provides campus users access to their own Web applications without needing to download, install, and maintain additional hardware and software.

VoIP

Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) supports wired and wireless IP phones, softphones, analog phones, fax machines, overhead paging systems, and emergency phones. Individual, group, and Contact Center IP Voice Services are available. 

Voice Services

The University of Michigan telephone infrastructure provides traditional telephone lines and voice services to customers on the Ann Arbor, Dearborn and Flint campuses. Specialized service options are available to non-UM facilities. In addition to the telephone services, a variety of companion services such voicemail, contact centers and conference calling are offered.

Videoconferencing Room Systems

ITS provides consultation, equipment, installation, training, and ongoing support for videoconferencing room systems.

Video Streaming

ITS' video streaming service broadcasts campus events in real time to viewers on campus and across the globe. The video content can be viewed live or at a later time from a storage archive of your choice. ITS will work with your video production team to arrange a live stream that’s right for the event and your audience.

Value Storage

Value Storage has been replaced by MiStorage.

U-M Google

U-M Google is a software bundle that includes the core Google Apps of Email, Calendar, Docs, Sites, Contacts, and Chat as well as over 40 other apps designed to improve collaboration.

U-M Box

U-M Box is a cloud based solution that allows you to share files with people inside and outside the University. It includes version control, online comments, assigning tasks, integration with Microsoft Office products, and email integration. You can also use Box Sync to back up local files on your computer to the cloud, allowing access from other computers and mobile devices.

Turbo Research Storage

Turbo Research Storage offers scalable storage to U-M researchers. The service provides NFSv3 and NFSv4 access. Turbo offers two security levels, one for some types of sensitive data, and one for non-sensitive data. Performance is intended to be sufficient for both IO operations and build file access

Textbooks

Textbook services provides links between CTools and the official textbook selection data stored in the central U-M administrative system. It also provides a tool for students to advertise their used textbooks for sale to other students.

Television

ITS delivers television content to campus buildings, residence halls, and the Northwood Community Apartments.

Teaching Evaluations

Teaching Evaluations allow anonymous evaluation of courses by students. Evaluation questionnaires are provided to students on a scheduled basis. The results are collected and reported to the appropriate departments or units.

Student Administration Application Services

The Student Administration (SA) Application Services consist of technologies and tools which support the administrative services used to manage student information and the related administrative detail that helps to maintain teaching and learning at U-M.

Standard Ethernet

Wired ethernet service will be available at data outlets in offices, classrooms, lab spaces, and other areas as necessary.  The in-building network will connect to the campus backbone network at 1Gbps or higher.

SharePoint

LSA IT administers the U-M SharePoint Portal, which has been provided to faculty and staff of the University of Michigan to better facilitate collaboration on administrative tasks through easy and convenient sharing of documentation, calendar information and tasks.

LSA IT offers server and service monitoring with several solutions designed to meet your needs.

Responsible Conduct of Research and Scholarship

Responsible Conduct of  Research and Scholarship (RCRS) uses special CTools site templates, structured educational content tools and assessment tools to deliver training and assessment on research and scholarship ethical issues. This service may be used to certify that training requirements in this area have been met.

Research HPC

Flux is the first university-wide, shared computational discovery or high-performance computing (HPC) service. It is designed to support both compute- and data-intensive research. Instead of the common practice of researchers owning the equipment, Flux uses an allocation approach that enables researchers to have faster access to HPC services.

Research Administration Application Services

The Research Administration Application Services consist of technologies and tools which support the business services used to manage the University’s research enterprise. Services are provided using a vendor-licensed software platform that is heavily configured to the specific needs of the University. Collectively, this suite of web-based applications is known as eResearch.

Poster Printing

LSA IT provides at-cost poster printing, ideal for banners, signs, posters, and displays, to students, faculty, and staff in LSA.

Podcasting Media Distribution

Podcasting Media Distribution is a collection of technologies which provide the ability to distribute audio and video podcasts or media via iTunesU and CTools sites. This service is subject to data retention policies.

Online Assessment and Surveys

Online Assessment and Surveys provide means to design, execute, and grade assessments to evaluate student progress and competency. These tools may also be used to conduct surveys to collect data in service of a teaching, learning, or research goal.

MRequest

MRequest is the web-based service for tracking and management of customer support. MRequest has customized the FootPrints software for the U-M environment and can further customize this software for customers needs. 

MPrint

MPrint is the secure login printing service for U-M faculty, staff, and students to print from any Internet-enabled computer to any networked campus printer. Students are allocated $24 for printing each term and faculty and staff are allocated $3 each term.

Mobile Applications

The Mobile Application Services consist of strategies, methodologies, technologies and tools that facilitate and enable Mobile development across campus. Mobile applications can consist of applications ("apps") that can be deployed to marketplaces like iTunes and Google Play as well as a "mobile view" of a website that lets customers view it on any device.

MiWorkspace MiWorkspace

MiWorkspace is a computing service that provides comprehensive support for U-M faculty and staff’s use of university-owned Windows and Mac computers. It includes desktop support by a campus network of IT professionals, file storage, information security, network connectivity, and secure printing.

MiVideo MiVideo

MiVideo is a content management service. It helps organize, catalog, share, search, and publish multimedia content. Management consoles make it easy to tag and filter content, as well as control access. MiVideo offers better security than free third-party vendors. Instructors can use MiVideo for free through the Learning Management Systems (Canvas and Blackboard). Departments can purchase the service to support Research and Marketing/Communications efforts.

MiStorage

MiStorage provides U-M faculty, staff and students the ability to store and access data to support applications in a user-friendly, secure and cost-effective environment in order to create, preserve and apply knowledge, art and academic values.

MiServer

MiServer is a virtual server environment managed by ITS. Choose either a Core Server, where you are the system administrator and install all software, or a Managed Server, which allows you to focus on managing applications instead of the operating system. Both options free you from managing physical servers and offer flexibility to select the right options for your campus computing needs.

MiDesktop

MiDesktop is a virtual desktop hosting environment managed by ITS. The service provides an easy-to-manage VDI platform, which allows simple and secure access to a custom pool of virtual desktops.

MiDatabase

MiDatabase is a virtual server with a managed database. Supported platforms include Microsoft SQL, MySQL and Oracle. ITS will monitor, patch and back up your database so you can focus on managing your data and applications. Reduce effort and costs as you no longer need to buy and manage your own hardware or software. Flexibility to select the right options for your campus computing needs.

Michigan Media

Michigan Media provides videotaping of events, live-streaming, edited marketing videos, general videos and a long list of video services.

MiBackup MiBackup

MiBackup (formerly TSM) provides automatic, scheduled, remote data backup for files located on servers that are managed by University of Michigan faculty, staff, and students.

Mainstream Storage

Mainstream Storage has been replaced by MiStorage.

M Cloud

M Cloud offers public cloud computing to the University of Michigan community. The service enables the U-M community to more easily consume public cloud computing, integrates resources on campus, provides consulting services and training, and looks for opportunities to provide shared services using cloud computing.

LSA Windows Web Application Hosting (WWAH)

LSA IT offers Windows web application hosting for applications developed and maintained by MIS as well as by individual units.

LSA Web Hosting Environment (WHE)

LSA's Web Hosting Environment (WHE) offers a commercial type webhosting platform for LSA faculty and staff. This service uses cPanel and is most useful primarily for those technically-inclined users with very specific software needs. 

LSA Unit Websites

LSA Web Services and Development, Marketing & Communications work with department web communicators to make their websites highly effective channels of communications for constituents, including prospective and current students and their parents, as well as faculty and staff.

LSA IT provides several security services for the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, including:

LSA Research Support

LSA Research Storage

LSA IT has partnered with ITS to offer up to two terabytes (2 TB) of storage to LSA faculty, LSA lecturers, and LSA GSRA/GSRI without cost to the individual or department.

LSA Research and Instrumentation Computer Backups with Acronis

Acronis provides a central backup repository for research and instrumentation computers running Windows 2000, XP, Vista, 7 and 8. Linux and Mac OS X based workstations are not eligible at this time. The service offers a disaster-recovery/bare-metal restore when standard file-based backup is not adequate enough for the workstation used to manage the instrument.

LSA Network Consulting

LSA IT can work with you and ITS to evaluate your current environment, identify IT requirements for new ones, and coordinate with the relevant U-M partners to improve your networking and IT.

LSA Management Information Systems (MIS)

The Management Information Systems team develops and maintains administrative information systems on behalf of the College and its departments. Additionally, MIS staff perform ad hoc administrative data retrieval and analysis for LSA departments and for the Dean's Office. 

LSA Home (H:) and Shared Group (S:) Directories

LSA IT provides a home directory (automatically mounted as H: on Windows) and a group directory (automatically mounted as S: on Windows) to all of its faculty and staff.

LSA High Performance Computing

LSA IT Advocacy and Research Support staff provide help utilizing campus-wide and local cluster computing resources for research, including training classes and workshops for the entire U-M community.

LSA Geographic Information System (GIS) Consulting

LSA provides Geographic Information System (GIS) consulting which includes help making maps, utilizing geospatial analysis, developing interactive web mapping applications, designing mobile GIS projects, teaching specialized GIS workshops, assistance with ESRI's ArcGIS software, and much more.

LSA Field IT Equipment Evaluation and Demonstration Program

Mobile hardware and software for your field work, whether it is using GIS, gathering data outdoors, conducting door-to-door surveys, or visiting archives. Researchers can borrow and evaluate state-of-the-art IT solutions, as well as receive guidance on best-practices; a try-before-you-buy approach.

LSA Faculty, Lab, & Research Websites (FLR)

LSA IT, in partnership with LSA Web Services, developed a service that allows faculty members at U-M, labs, minor programs, and other areas of LSA to develop an easily editable, U-M branded website.

LSA Desktop Support

LSA IT has several teams who provide desktop computer support to faculty and staff across the college. Learn more about what services we provide.

LSA Desktop Backup with CrashPlan

LSA provides accounts on the ITS Desktop Backup service (CrashPlan) free of charge to LSA faculty, staff, graduate student instructors (GSI), and graduate student research assistants (GSRA) using university-owned equipment. CrashPlan is used to automatically back-up, and make available for restore, critical data stored on personal computers that isn't stored elsewhere.

LSA ArcGIS Enterprise Service

The ArcGIS Enterprise Service provides members of LSA with access to enterprise-level data collaboration, sharing, and management features. The service supports enterprise geodatabases, web services, and distributed geoprocessing or geoanalytics.

LSA Advocacy

Advocates act as consultants in LSA departments to support the technology needs of faculty, staff and students. An LSA IT Advocate provides:

  • Personal attention to and focus on a specific departments’ IT needs.
  • Help navigating the IT landscape.
  • Shepherding of IT solutions that address their technology needs.
Lab Consulting & Design Request

LSA IT provides consultations for design and setup of new or existing research or teaching labs.

IT Service Provider Toolkit

The IT Service Provider Toolkit (Base Package) allows university organizations and their IT professionals to manage IT-related support tickets in a straight-forward way while taking advantage of a powerful platform like ServiceLink that drives information sharing and collaboration. This service is currently being made available as part of the MiWorkpace effort.  

IT Security Ethical Hacking IT Security Ethical Hacking

Ethical hacking is an advanced, offensive form of security testing designed to provide a deep technical analysis of a target environment’s vulnerability to exploitation and attack. A skilled security professional will explore a combination of approaches to discover weaknesses that a hacker could exploit.

IT Security Essential IT Security Essential

This suite of services provides a foundation of protection for university IT resources, including those that enable teaching, learning, research, and administration. It is a continuation and expansion of the IT security program that has been in place for years.

IT Security DRBC Planning IT Security DRBC Planning

The IT Security Disaster Recovery/Business Continuity Planning service helps units identify risks and threats to unit operational missions and institutional data, and puts plans in place to minimize any potential interruptions.

IT Security Consulting IT Security Consulting

A highly skilled information security professional from ITS will perform or assist with IT security work tailored to unit requirements on a short or long-term basis.

Inventory Application Service

The Inventory Application Service consists of technologies and tools which support the business services used to manage the products acquired through Supply Chain for the university. Inventory Application Service is a flexible, comprehensive inventory management system that enables increased inventory accuracy and customer service levels while reducing costs and inventory write-offs.

Internet

This service is defined as access to networks outside of the University of Michigan networks. At this time this includes, but is not necessarily limited to: Commodity Internet service (ie most of the Internet), Internet2 (ie mostly other Higher Ed institutions), Michigan Lambda Rail (MiLR), Merit Network, and the CIC OmniPOP.

Imaging Services

The Imaging/Scanning service provides a secure enterprise scanning application that enables the user to efficiently capture and organize images of paper documents or born-digital documents, retrieve those documents securely, and instantly access them using a web or client interface. Users may choose to leverage the central scanning service or setup unit-level self-scanning implementation.

Identity and Access Management

ITS Identity and Access Management (IAM) services provide members of the U-M community with an online identity and appropriate access to U-M computing resources and data, which can vary based on the individual's role or status.

Human Resources Application Services

The Human Resources (HR) Application Services consist of technologies and tools which support the administrative services used to manage employee information at U-M.

GradTools

CTools Grad Tools sites are designed for doctoral students in the Rackham Graduate school. Grad Tools sites provide a dissertation checklist used to track progress in fulfilling degree requirements. Other tools may be used  to communicate and collaborate with the student's committee or research collaborators as they perform research and navigate through their degree requirements.

Globus File Transfer

Globus is a cloud-based fast, reliable and secure file transfer service that allows researchers to copy files between a laptop, lab server, research computing center, national supercomputing facility or any other storage system, using just a browser. Just start a transfer between systems and walk away. U-M is also a Globus Provider, enabling data sharing between other Globus users.

Financial Application Services

The Financial Application Services consist of technologies and tools which support the business services used to manage the University’s financial and physical resources.

FileMaker

LSA IT provides FileMaker Server database hosting for LSA-affiliated faculty, staff, and units.

Exchange Email & Calendar

ITS Exchange E-Mail and Calendaring is an email and calendaring service provided to members of the campus community for email accounts that contain or receive regulated data. The service provides a secure, robust and reliable platform for Exchange services.

Enterprise Portals & Websites

The Enterprise Portals/B&F Websites Services consist of technologies that support Business and Finance and ITS departments and services. Services are provided using open source web management tools, along with custom and vendor-supported applications and content management tools. Enterprise Portals exist as a launching point for central administrative systems and IT services.

Enterprise Data Services

Enterprise Data Services is a group of services that capture, store, move, integrate, or supply data. These capabilities are used both internally to ITS and elsewhere in the University community. One group of features is comprised of data sets in the Enterprise Data Warehouse. Another group of features are methods of combining enterprise data with local or unit data.

Digital Signage Digital Signage

Digital Signage offers high-impact visible communication to anyone in U-M buildings and public areas on the U-M Campus.

Development / Alumni Application Services

The Development/Alumni Application Service consists of tools which support the business services used to manage the University’s fundraising activities. Services are provided using an enterprise customer relationship management (CRM) tool. The CRM tool is called Donor and Alumni Relationship Tool (DART), and is accessible via Wolverine Access.

Desktop Backup

The ITS Desktop Backup service takes an easy to use and feature­-full commercial backup system and integrates U-M passwords, ShortCode billing and enhanced security to protect all types of data, including sensitive data. Use a web browser to access and restore files, retain an unlimited number of file versions and get support from local IT support staff and ITS Desktop Backup experts.

Data Concierge

The Data Concierge service pilot will enable users to request and obtain administrative and learning management data (FIN, HR, Research, Student, Development, Learning Management, etc.) in a consistent, timely, and secure manner in close collaboration with data owners and subject matter experts. Information Quest (IQ) will leverage and complement existing successful data request processes and make them more consistent and transparent.

Data Centers

ITS Data Centers centrally host research, teaching, clinical and administrative data. They follow industry best practices such as:

  • State-of-the-art climate control to improve energy efficiency and reduce costs.
  • Advanced fire protection and security systems to improve reliability and redundancy and protect against power outages, breaches or disasters.
  • 24/7/365 maintenance and technical support and robust networking to ensure data availability for units and individuals.
  • Unit access to equipment, as needed.

Data Center offerings include:

  • Michigan Academic Computing Center (MACC)
    The MACC is designed for
    • Hosting data for university units and affiliates.
    • Providing an alternate secure and reliable location for unit servers and equipment.
  • Modular Data Center (MDC)
    The MDC is designed for:
    • Researchers with high computational data needs.
    • Units and individuals working with Advanced Research Computing.
  • Administrative Services Building Data Center
    The ASB Data Center hosts university administrative systems data for ITS.
Custom Website Creation (SiteMaker)

Custom Website Creation for teaching and learning purposes are provided. This service utilizes the UM.SiteMaker technology. UM.Sitemaker is a web application that enables the creation of highly customized websites and web-databases by persons with no special web development expertise. SiteMaker sites may be linked to CTools sites to take advantage of CTools access and management controls.

CTools Project Sites

CTools project sites are multipurpose and can be used to facilitate collaboration between researchers or student teams, or by staff to support business processes.

CTools Course Sites

CTools course sites provide a set of tools that allow faculty to communicate class requirements, share documents, manage assignments, assess student performance, distribute grades and more. Course sites can be linked to official U-M course rosters so that site access is automatically managed based on course enrollment.

Contact Center

The Contact Center allows a department to handle a large volume of telephone calls in an efficient and effective manner by directing incoming calls to an available agent. A customer contact center is designed for work groups or departments, such as help desks, registrar's office, admissions office, reservation desks, customer service, ticket sales, or desktop support.

Canvas Course Sites

Canvas course sites provide tools for faculty to communicate class requirements, share documents, manage assignments, assess student performance, distribute grades and more. Canvas also allows for peer grading, learning outcome mapping, online rubrics, learning analytics and speed grading. Course sites are linked to official U-M course rosters to automatically manage site access.

BlueJeans

ITS contracts with BlueJeans Network to provide their cloud-based conferencing service to the university. BlueJeans offers audio, video, and content sharing.

University of Michigan BlueJeans accounts are available to all U-M faculty, staff, students, and sponsored affiliates on the Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint campuses, including the Health System that have opted into the campus contract. Non-university participants can attend BlueJeans meetings without a university account.

Backbone

The UMnet Backbone and Backbone Services are comprised of the Backbone Interconnect Network (BIN), Backbone Core, Distribution Layer (in Data Center and Buildings), all interconnecting links, DNS and DHCP Infrastructure, WiFi Controllers, Captive Portals, RADIUS infrastructure and Research Network.

Analytics and BI

The Analytics and BI Services consist of strategies, technologies and tools that support analytic capabilities including basic reporting, ad-hoc query, dashboards and predictive analytics. Analytics is the discovery and communication of meaningful patterns in data. Services are provided mainly by the business intelligence (BI) tool called Business Objects and a dashboard called MReports.

AFS

Also known at U-M as Institutional File System (IFS) or MFile, the Andrew File System (AFS) is a central file storage, sharing, and retrieval system that you can access from Mac, Windows, and Unix computers. AFS eliminates the need to carry flash drives or other external storage mediums.

3D Printing

LSA IT provides access to a 3D extrusion printer capable of printing objects up to 10 inches square in layers as thin as 100 microns and uses either ABS or PLA material. This service is free to faculty, staff, and students. You are responsible for obtaining and providing your own print material cartridge and USB key; we simply supply the time and the 3D printer to help you.
